This bench was put out for the trash by a tenant in my complex [which means by someone in one of the 4 buildings [all attached and looking like one building from the front]. Close inspection of the bench found that it had no cracks or snags. I would love to put it in a garden, but not having one, tried to find a business to take it. Tried the restaurant next door. They didn’t want it, they have an outdoor bench. I suggested this one was better. They declined. Asked the White Horse across the street, they had enough with their tables and chairs. Asked the ‘mini-wallmart’ if they wanted it, but she said as they were not a ‘food-selling-establishment’ they could not put it outside. Asked the super to our complex if we could put it on the curb, so that the smokers would sit there and use it. He said he would be fined for ‘leaving something curb side’. I put it on the curb anyway. And within 20 minutes, a sweet young thing was sitting on it smoking. By the end of day, it was back on the trash heap. Not one to be deterred removed it once again from the trash heap, or at least set it upright and went to see the bar next door. He, the manager/owner? rather hemmed and hawed… but said ok, if I would set it up, he would entertain it in front of his establishment. As I was on my way to class at HB Studio, I didn’t have the time to stand around and chat, but he took the time to say, look it is 4:40 and I don’t think it will last very long there; some one will take it. Fine, I said, just as long as it doesn’t end up being crushed by the garbage truck. 10:00 p.m. after class, I stopped by the bar. Bench still there. Owner/manager not, but another person-of-responsibility was behind the bar. I told him about my encounter with owner/manager and would he pass along the message that at 10 pm bench was still in place. He said he would and he also said he liked the bench there. Looked like it belonged. I agreed. Now a week later? The bench is still there. Looks like it was a match made in heaven.
