50 Years
Jan Jans & the children and the red cat. [Rather like Clifford the big red dog.] Little did I know, first time around that this strip and I would later celebrate half a century. At the time it was so fresh, funny and spot on.The strip is a mix of “For Better or For Worse” / Baby Blues and Zits.
Lamp Lighter
This street lamp shines so brightly because the ‘lamp lighter’ has just cleaned it. Said lamp-lighter arrives in a small truck he drives. Parking the truck in the middle of the narrow brick street, he exits the cab and walks around to the back of the truck. There he reaches up and opens a half-sized door to an open box. He climbs the stairs, shuts the door behind him and now stands in the box. Using gears on the side of the box he raises himself to the height of the lamp. At height, he swings the box to abut the shade. Removing the metal lid, he replaces the bulb, wipes off the glass- could do better on this score – and after wiping the metal top replaces it. Now reversing the process he drives the 50 feet to the next lamp post.

Wex! for you-know-who. Thank you reader J. Anyone have ideas about replacing the word ‘step’ in familial relationships. ‘Step’ has negative connotations and what does it mean anyway! Let’s replace that one too.
Doesn’t get Whiter
Had a hankering for white bread. Came out of nowhere but prior to my trip to the grocery store. So I indulged. I doubt there is an iota of nutrition but none-the-less- it tasted just like I hoped it would. Was only a third of a loaf, so damage was limited and I shared it with the backyard-birds.
Handy
Rubber gloves at the kitchen sink. What to do with them when wash-up is finished. Hang them over the faucet, the cupboard door beneath the sink, drape them over the edge of the sink? All unsatisfactory. Until now:

“Could never live Upstate”, she said, “The snow can fall in early April. Who can live with that?” She said. The last 48 hours have brought multiple snow storms, hail, more snowfall, more hail and wind. Whateverhappenedto ‘April showers bring May flowers’?
